Eritrea players desert U20 CECAFA tournament for Asylum

On Tuesday morning the four players failed to attend the training session and  Eritrean coach Haile Efrem down played their absesnce, and claimed the players were unwell.

Kenya enjoyed the super advantage during the Wednesday match with Eritrea and won 1-0 in the semi finals of the U20 CECAFA challenge cup. The match was settled by a own goal,Yosief Mebrahtu who scored in his own net.

The players are reported to have deserted the team’s hotel in the resort town of Jinja. The missing players are believed to be seeking asylum.Eritrean footballers have in the past taken the opportunity of foreign trips to flee and seeking asylum in foreign countries.

Players who fleed were Simon Asmelash, Hermon Fessehaye, goalkeeper Girmay Hannibal and  the tournament joint top-scorer Yoseif Tesfai Mewael.
